Region Overview
The Indian whisky scene has undergone a significant transformation in recent decades, moving from a market traditionally dominated by affordable blends, often made with a molasses base, to a global force in premium, high-quality single malt production. India is now the world's largest producer and consumer of whisky, with Indian whiskies making up eight of the top twenty best-selling whiskies globally. This growth is fueled by rising disposable incomes, urbanization, and a growing middle class that's increasingly seeking out premium spirits and high-quality domestic products. Driven by pioneering distilleries like Amrut and Paul John, the emphasis is shifting towards crafting authentic single malts from malted barley, moving away from molasses-based spirits. Traditional copper pot stills are used alongside modern techniques, ensuring both rich flavor profiles and consistent quality. Distilleries are increasingly adhering to international best practices, including avoiding additives and chill filtration, further enhancing the quality of Indian whiskies.
