Boss Hog VII image
WhistlePig Boss Hog VII
The Boss Hog embodies our enduring quest to create the finest and most interesting Rye Whiskey- a pursuit that carries us to the very edges of the earth. Inspired by the first recorded circumnavigation of the globe, The Boss Hog VII: Magellan's Atlantic is a Straight Rye Whiskey with an uncharted cask journey that stretches across continents. After seventeen years of slumber in American Oak, it first encounters new Spanish staves from the mountainous forests of northern Spain; a cask nearly impossible to tame yet well worth the effort. Crossing the Atlantic the whiskey finds its finish in fragrant South American teakwood. This rare and outstandingly complex whiskey is barrel strength, bottled between 105.1 and 107.8 proof.

Note: This whisky is part of an ongoing series, with variability between each release due to differences in mash bill, barrels used, age profile, and others. If the specific version is not listed, ask your server or a store employee for more info.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Intensely aromatic, with cinnamon sugar, allspice, and maple. With time, toasted wood notes arise alongside creamy vanilla, roasted almonds, and a touch of ground espresso.
Palate: Spicy cloves and sweet brandied cherries abound, with baking spices rampant. A closer look reveals subtle hints of charred oak, sage, and dark chocolate.
Finish: Everlasting; gobs of cinnamon, oak spice, and a gentle warmth demand another sip.
Michter's 10 Year Old Rye
Michter's Distillery 10 Year Old Rye is the brainchild of master distiller Willie Pratt. Pratt, a maturation perfectionist with over forty years of distilling experience, is known as "Dr. No"since he often refuses to bottle aging barrels of whiskey. According to Pratt, whiskey that is aged for over a decade hits a "fork in the road,"and can either become incredible or unpalatable. "One of the barrels we sampled was unbelievably woody," Magliocco says. "And we reject that, we literally sewer it. Willie had another barrel that tasted delicious, but the consistency was like molasses, and we obviously couldn't sell that."

Note: A very small quantity of whiskies came from this single barrel, so taste variability is higher than with larger production whiskies. Many times this is not a big deal (i.e. Blanton's), but sometimes it matters (i.e. Larceny Barrel Proof versions). If the specific barrel is not listed, ask your server or a store employee for more info.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Deep notes of vanilla, toffee, and melted butter.
Palate: Toasted almonds and cinnamon with an ample dose of crushed pepper and a hint of citrus.
Finish: Finishes long with a touch of cloves.
